I was doing some rabbit hole touring on YouTube the other day, and got into a series of Uriah Heep videos. I recall Uriah Heep being pretty popular at parties back in the early ’70’s, yet they do not show up on classic rock radio programs these days. I think this is a shame as Uriah Heep can stand toe-to-toe with any rock band of the time. They may not have had as deep a catalogue of hits as others, but their best ranks right up there. C’mon – Easy Livin’ is one of the best rock & driving songs of all time.
So, I want to give air time to Uriah Heep by selecting one album for Album of the Week. I know many people love “Demons and Wizards” but I’m going with “Look At Yourself”. I’m a fan of the heavier side of their work, and I think this album captures their hook-laden rock (Look at Yourself, Love Machine) and grand rock ballad (July Morning) abilities the best.
If you are already a Heep fan, then you’ll have the songs and albums you need. If you’re just getting into them, then I suggest that a “best of” or anthology of their 1970’s work will get you all their best work. From there you can expand into their albums as your taste goes. I believe any classic rock fan needs some Uriah Heep!
FYI – the original “Look at Yourself” album ends after Love Machine.
