Released in 1985, Songs from the Big Chair was a big album for Tears for Fears. There are certainly some memorable songs on here. “Shout” was an anthem for the times, and a case can be made that it remains one for today. A similar case can be made for “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”.
My favourites are the two above, “Mothers Talk” and “Head Over Heels/Broken”. When I listen to these, I smile as I go back to the madcap life of the mid ’80’s. The album ends with “Listen” which, with its sparse guitars & minimal vocals, eases you nicely out of the album.
Definitely an ’80’s album, but the key songs are written & played well such that they do not sound out of place today.
