Neil Young – Everyone Knows This is Nowhere

Neil Young – Everyone Knows This is Nowhere

Released in 1969, this is Neil Young’s second album, and his first with Crazy Horse.  Overall, this is a great album and does not at all feel dated.

It contains a wide range of songs with the rocker “Cinnamon Girl”, the quieter “Round and Round” and the country-tinged “The Losing End” showcasing Young’s skills as a writer and musician.  “Down By The River” was a staple for waltzes in high school dances.  I know the subject of the song is odd for a waltz, but teenage hormones know little sensibility.  “Cowgirl in the Sand” is an epic little guitar journey.  I love how each side ends with a longer song that is laced with the fuzzed, staccato guitar for which Young is famous.

By the way, the dog on the cover is named Winni, after Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Young lived for a number of years with his mother.  Unfortunately, Winni did not become as popular as Winnie the Pooh, another “Winnipegger”.
