I grew up in the sixties and early seventies. My musical tastes were shaped by those times, and by what we were listening to at friends’ houses and parties. I was also a music snob, and dare I say a Pompous Ass when it came to music that I was not fond of. When the disco craze arose, I was very much anti-disco. If a disco song came on the radio, I violently changed the station and loudly cursed the world for allowing such a form of music to exist.
I have mellowed a lot over the years. Life will do that for you. While I am much more tolerant of the diversity of music and have come to enjoy listening to the genres and songs that I previously detested, I reserve the right to revert to the pompous ass on occasion. And I do know that I can be convinced that I am wrong.
So, I expect to be proven wrong by you folks. I look forward to our journey of discovering new music & uncovering hidden (to me!) gems, and enjoying again the favourites that form the soundtrack of our lives.
Some of the songs that I ran from at the time which are tolerable now:
- Jerry Doucette – Mama Let Him Play
- Kool & the Gang – Celebration
- Doug & the Slugs – Too Bad
- Terry Jacks – Seasons in the Sun
- The Beach Boys – Kokomo
I think that the rosy haze of nostalgia for the friends and events of these times has coloured my listening of these songs today. When I hear these now, I have fond recollections.
Some songs that I still cannot stand:
- Carl Douglas – Kung Fu Fighting
- Paper Lace – The Night Chicago Died
- Ace – How Long
Sorry, rosy haze – you need to do better!
