Many folks are introduced to Donovan through Sunshine Superman, Atlantis or Hurdy Gurdy Man. These are certainly highlights, but not a full representation of his work.
Sunshine Superman was released in 1966 and marked his entry into the world of psychedelia. He did not leave his folk roots, rather he wove them into his ongoing work. It almost seems that you have to use elaborate adjectives to describe his music: his blending of electric & acoustic guitars, and sitars in songs with medieval & psychedelic themes evokes a trippy walk through a verdant glen. It’s Arthurian psychedelia – the sword in the stoned.
I take this album like going out for an evening at a fine restaurant; it’s a full course experience – take your time & enjoy the dishes as they are presented to you.
