I first heard Blue Öyster Cult on their 1973 album Tyranny and Mutation. It pretty much rocked out, and with titles like “7 Screaming Diz-Busters” and a guitarist named Buck Dharma, how could you go wrong? Blue Öyster Cult (BOC) has always marched to their own beat, with a sly sense of humour unique to a hard rock world.
They certainly achieved more fame for subsequent hits like “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” and “Burnin’ for You”, and I do like those songs, but Secret Treaties as a whole represents, for me, the best of Blue Öyster Cult’s style. The lyrics are certainly “out there” in fine BOC tradition, and the music is top notch. Their excellent musicianship is always on display and the production & mix on the songs really adds to the effect.
It’s a relatively short album (39 minutes), so you can easily sneak it into your day. It’ll be worth it. For some reason the playlist embed code isn’t working properly for this album, so I’ve had to go for old school linking. Sorry!
