Babe Ruth – First Base

Babe Ruth – First Base

This is Babe Ruth’s first (and best in my opinion) album, released in 1972.  I purchased this in the mid ’70’s, based on the album cover (my arcane purchasing method is discussed here).  I had not heard of this band, but I thought the cover was cool, and having been done by Roger Dean (of Uriah Heep & Yes cover fame), it passed a number of my purchasing criteria.

Starting off with the rocker “Wells Fargo” sealed the deal for me.  The cover of Frank Zappa’s “King Kong” is well done & a great listen.  “The Mexican” kicks and covers Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western theme for “A Few Dollars More”, which just added to the fun.

The vocals from Jennie Haan are terrific and the musicianship of Alan Shacklock (guitar), Dave Hewitt (bass), Dave Punshon (keyboards) & Dick Powell (drums) is outstanding.  This is definitely a hidden little gem & deserves more recognition.
