This is just a good ol’ fashioned fun hard rock album. No deep themes, wizards, nor mystics; just great rock. Time to put the album on & let yourself rock out a tad.
Ronnie Montrose had been a successful session musician, playing on Van Morisson’s 1971 album Tupelo Honey. He was also part of the Edgar Winter Group when “Frankenstein” was recorded in 1972. Montrose decided to form his own band in early 1973, releasing this, their first album, later that year.
The band was comprised of Montrose on guitar, Bill Church on bass, Denny Carmassi on drums and Sammy Hagar on vocals. This was our introduction to Sammy Hagar who went on to join Van Halen (Van Hagar to some) and have a solo career in rock & tequila.
Like most folks, I think the first side really rocks, with the first three songs truly amping it up (“Space Station No. 5” is my favourite). Don’t sleep on the rest of the album, though, because it’s pretty good fun rock. Remember, no wizards or deep themes!
