It appears to me that we go through waves of nostalgic renaissances on a regular basis, showing up in TV series such as Mad Men, and the reliving of 1930’s adventures through the Indiana Jones movie series. I imagine that is due to our memories of good times in the past, and a wistful desire to relive them. We didn’t fully appreciate them at the time, so we’ll darn well appreciate them again! We certainly are good at weeding out the less desirable moments, and emphasizing the great moments.
We can also construct artificial pasts, imaging what it would have been like to live in certain moments of the past. I grew up with the American space program as a big part of my life. There was always something really cool about space exploration and all the promise that it held for our future lives – flying cars, flitting about the planets, funky technology a la The Jetsons. If I were an adult at the time, what would I expect a soundtrack to this be?
In thinking about this, I’ve flexed the quirky side of my musical interests. For me, the soundtrack needs to be a little off-base (off-planet?), fun, very loungey and perhaps best served with a side of cheese.
Unfortunately, the following two songs were not available on Spotify. They definitely add to the ambience!
- Pizzicato Five – Good
- Tipsy – El Bombo Atomico
